I am speaking from experience and know quite well what I am talking about.

I have this setup in my shop, a test radio that was once in a mobile unit.

Yes - you can program the CDM series from the accessory connector but it is
not necessary unless you have specific reasons or needs to do so.

I don't know where you get your information from but it's time to re-educate yourself
on this one.

PS - I have never bricked a motorola cdm radio using either method and have programed
many of these.
