I concur, program via the mic jack on the radio's head. Don't try to program via the jack for the remote head unit, THAT'S the unsafe part. I've been programming CDM's for a long time and never once had an issue or bricked one. Make sure your cable doesn't pop out while programming and you should be in good shape!
