Just my two cents, maybe they were talking about the dual head kit. You are never supposed to program the radio with the dual head kit. You are supposed to disconnect one of the heads from the interface box, and connect the heads control cable to the radio chassis, then program.
In a remote mount, the jack on the front of the radio chassis, and the one on the rear of the head, are control cable jacks, not mic jacks, and should never be used to try to program. The mic jack and the rear accessory jack are both acceptable programming points. Like many have stated, I too have programmed hundreds of radios over the years through the mic jack and have never bricked any.
