After the reboot the PC takes a lot of time to recover. It also doesn't seem to like to change the com port number, again only on 64 bit Vista. I can stick in only one USB port and get it to work (as COM6), but if I move it around to any other USB port it refuses to work even if I change the port number back to COM6. It's not a show stopper but it sure is frustrating.
This really sounds like a driver issue. Most software is written for 32-bit and will run ok on 64-bit operating system with little to no problems. Drivers on the other hand are a sticky wicket and it is most likely that the driver you are using is for 32-bit, and thus blue screens on your 64-bit system.

The best thing to do, is finding a 64-bit for your cable. Check with the manufacturer of the cable, and see if they have any drivers available, even a beta driver at this point would be nice. Until there is more demand for 64-bit drivers and software, most vendors will continue push out 32-bit stuff only.
