An interesting article, two things come to the forefrong while reading it:

Up to 256 talk groups can be programmed into the system; not all are in use, but the additional capability allows for future growth.

I wonder if the author or editor read that line. Just from my position here and running Trunker on the NE part of the state I have 354 groups ID'd.

Doll says the greatest challenge in getting the system up and running was securing adequate spectrum to support the increased communications activity. According to Doll, South Dakota is the only state to have secured frequency by participating in a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) auction. “You can never underestimate the challenge you are going to have with spectrum. You really have to take it on because if you are waiting for the Federal government to fix it and for things to just somehow magically align, I don’t think it’s necessarily going to happen. You’re going to have to take that bull by the horns and wrestle it to the ground and get what you need

This is the most interesting part of the article. Here we have a state official admitting they are illegally using frequenies. The auction they participated in and secured frequencies for was for paging spectrum. They bought paging frequencies which they are now using on the State TRS, and although I suspected that in the past, it is good to know I was right. These are the same guys who removed a public document from their website, yet this guy is stupid enough to admit an illegal act in print.
