I can never hear Cleveland Center
I'm in Michigan and I hear planes calling Cleveland Center telling them they are at flight level 230 or something, but I never hear the center respond. Do I have to be close to te center?

Find a local RCAG site and program it into your scanner. You will for sure hear Cleveland center.
From the link above, figure out which site is closest to you. You dont need to program all of them in your scanner.

In my experience, you still need to be right on top of the RCAG. The RCAGs don't have any more power, or a different radiation pattern, than the center w/ respect to hearing them on the ground. The RCAGs simply provide more coverage for the planes in the air, along with serving as backup sites.
I live about 20 miles from the Chardon RCAG, and no way can I pick up the ground comms from my house. So one day I drove out to that RCAG. I only started hearing ground comms when I was about 1 mile away.

Depending on the frequency and what it is being used for it may determine reception range. Maybe it is used as a low level sector freqnency that does not need great transmitter power. Whereas high level sectors in my experience you can get pilot/controller about 20 miles out from the transmitter(RCAG). What freq iis it if I may ask ???? If you want to get a good 150-180 mile range on high altitude you will need to plug in all the listed frequencies. Low level at 16000-20000 feet probably a good 130 mile range.

Not sure who you were asking, but here's the details of the Chardon RCAG, by me.
By the way, I never dug into this - what exactly does low, high, & ultra high mean? Do those refer to altitude ranges, and if so, what are the altitudes? Does it matter how far away the plane is from the center, as the crow flies? I know you gave some details in your previous post...

Low Altitude = Up to 23,000ft
High Altitude = 23,000ft to 33,000ft
Ultra High Altitude = Above 33,000ft

beat me to the puch shaft I see. Ultra if I am not mistaken runs above anywhere between 340-370. I'll scan and post a copy of the sectors when I am at home on my home set.

Quick question. Looking at the RCAG list, how do you know where the transmitter is located. I live in ZNY coverage area, but from the names on the RCAG list doesn't give me a clue where they are located? Thanks.

Are we talking about aircraft or the ground station?? If it's the ground station, you'll need to be within 10-15 miles. Aircraft, on the other hand, can be heard out to 150-200 miles if they're up above 33K ft, less distance at lower altitudes as previously noted.

Actually I think that Big Flat is the closest one to me. I only say that because if I travel south approx. 10 miles I am able to pick up both the low and high sector for that transmitter. I was just curious if there is a way to tell where they are located. Thanks.

I had found the actual location on freqofnature.com, but their database link doesn't seem to be working:

I am not able to get that link to work either. It must not be a valid link any longer.
