Default What Are SITA Frequencies ? (replacing acars ?)

Hello,

Saw a few references to SITA frequencies mixed in with acars freq lists.
Did a Google on SITA, but still a bit confused.

What are SITA frequencies, and how do they it relate to acars ?

Is it a replacement for acars, or...?

Thanks,
Bob

Default Sita

It appears that SITA is an aviation logistics company working with the airline industry in replacing the ATIS analog voice transmissions at airports with a digital format, freeing up the pilot from handwritting the info down, instead will have the needed info printed out or displayed on a video screen.

SITA is a direct competitor to ARINC. They offer both data link services like ACARS on thier own network. SITA has blanketed most if not all of North America and as far as I know they're all high speed a/g links, not monitoriable like original ACARS. ARINC is also offering new technology a/g as well. In Canada, SITA is using 136.850 across the country. As for ATIS info being sent digitally, yes, D-ATIS is in use at most larger airports now and the data is dostributed via ACARS on both ARINC and SITA networks.

Read all about it here:

To step back in time a little.

In the early days of ACARS ARINC had little infrastructure in Europe and Canada.

SITA is more of a co-operative buisness set up shortly after WWII to provide infrastructure for the air transport industry on a 'not for profit' basis. They provide a global IT network and on the back of that supplied the ACARS service in Europe and Canada. About ten years ago ARINC started supplying ACARS terminals at major European airports - initially those that handled a lot of US aircraft.

Both ARINC and SITA work together to ensure compatability of the various data infrastructures though they compete for data transfer buisness

ARINC voice and ACARS radio frequencies are now licensed (in the USA) to Aviation Spectrum Resources, Inc. ARINC as such is focused more on HF digital services now. More info is available at ARINC - World Leader in Transportation Communications and Systems Engineering..
