That's sad, even though I haven't gotten to see one of these demonstrations in years, I still remember seeing it for the first time vividly as a kid. Last year I went to the Airfest at Lackland AFB, and while they had the Blue Angels, I don't recall Fat Albert doing a JATO demo(at least the day I was there), and this year's Airfest won't be including the Blue Angels at Randolph AFB so I'm really SOL on this one.

I've never seen it myself, but I can imagine it was really something to see in person!

I found a video on YouTube:

Let me guess ... someone is "concerned" about the environmental impact of all that noise ... and heat ... and smoke ... and fuel consumption.

Actually not the case. All the JATO bottle have been extenguished. They are not reusable and the company that made them is either no longer in business or just not making them anymore and the Blue Angels have simply run out of bottles. The last demo of the JATO takeoff will take place at their Homecoming Airshow @ NAS Pensacola on Nov 13-14, 2009.

So this part of the original story is not true?

"Trouble is, the bottles date to the Vietnam War, and it costs about $16,000 to get one reinspected and approved for use, said Capt. Edward Jorge, one of the plane's pilots. The expense has become prohibitive."

I'd be more inclined to believe a member of the Blue Angels than some random poster on RR.

That's too bad. Maybe another war should be started somewhere that doesn't have one. There is always enough money for that. They could blackops the JATO project or siphon off funds for it from somewhere.

Never mind that the United States defense budget is already as much as the rest of the world is, COMBINED.

More food for thought:

It is absolutely ridiculous.

I do believe that the current administration is cutting the DOD budget and the recruitment budget, to which the demo teams fall under, are being stripped to the bone.

The great O admin actually detests the military and will do what ever they can do to hog-tie them and preclude their operational development.

Unknowingly, I was fortunate enough to see the final public JATO launch of Fat Albert this past weekend in VA Beach.

Er... you believe what you read in the papers? Written by a reporter who, if he's like the TV news 'reporters' I've heard chatting on set off camera, are proud of not knowing anything at all about the things they report on? The reporters who call APC's 'Tanks'?

Reporters routinely get technical details wrong.

Bush's FY2009 Defense Budget(excluding costs of the wars)= $487.7 billion

Obama's FY2010 Defense Budget(excluding costs of the wars)= $527 billion

It's been a few years since calculus, but I don't think an 7.5% increase meets the definition of "cutting the DOD budget."

Look, you don't have to like Obama or any democrat or liberal or (insert political label), for any reason at all, but please don't spout off falsehoods to justify your positions.

Amongst other things, calculus can be used for the calculating the value of something at an instantaneous point in time.

Since we are comparing increase vs. decrease I'd wager we really are talking about basic math here.

That's called derivitization. For the sake of emphasis, I was trying to juxtapose the mention(and implied use) of higher math against the fact it's entirely unnecessary to determine that the Pentagon's budget will increase under Obama. I was also attempting to avoid speculating where the poster gets his facts from or making any other accusations while still being a jack@$$, but I may have gone awry somewhere.

The news media is about as credible nowadays as strangers guessing on the street.

Again, I believe the Navy guy.

Oh quit the squabbling and have a gander at this. Fat Albert always looks better with the RATO packs lit.

YouTube - Blue Angels Fat Albert takeoff with rockets.

Ive' been fortunate enough to see them a couple times myself. Truly an ear piercing spectacle. One thing I thought was so amazing was listening to the Blue Angels on my scanner (a pro-2042) back in 2003 I think it was. They were flying in formation several days before the event and chatting about how our town (Loveland,CO) was getting bigger and how dry it was.

Yep, cut military speeding in favor of socialistic GSE-like spending for federal health care and "stimulus."

Now I thought a lot of C-130's had JATO capability. I thought the jets were called "cans".
