Was done here in the late 80's. Airways Corporation run ATC, some airports and all the ground aids. Civil Aviation Authority are the regulatory body that does the licences, examinations, compliance, etc.

Never say never, but from the outside looking in few really understand what a pork producer the FAA is for members of Congress. Unfunded mandates and not to mention the FAA's integration with DHS, Military, et al.

What is really happening here is we got a bunch of people that think they are important grousing around on a fringe subject and they think people should listen to whatever they say a gospel.

The FAA is *the worlds* premiere Air Traffic system staffed by the best trained men and women supported by a premium training staff. The policies and procedures developed at the FAA for the FAA are replicated and emulated by other nations Air Traffic systems. It didn't happen by accident and it didn't happen because of privatization.

Seems to work okay in Canada for the last few years.
If the FAA controller force was as small as Nav Canada is, probably would work here too.

Of some concern this time around (this comes up every few years), the air traffic controllers union (NATCA) is more supportive of the idea of privatization. The funny thing is, many controllers I've talked to, didn't even know about the privatization talks, let alone NATCA's support for it. Maybe the union should put this out there for their members before supporting it in congress.

While I only know of 1 semi-privatized (low density) control tower in the area, it's not fully privatized. The controllers are all contract employees, but all of the maintenance for the ATC related equipment, is still done by the FAA techs.

You would think, someone could point to great success of the semi-privatization of the postal service as a fine example of how NOT to do things. Of course, a big part of the problem there is that congress still has a hand in their operations.

That likely should have said "Some Republicans in the House have come up with a way to save tax dollars". But, hey - it is the Times...
