Smile Cool Story

Birmingham's first dispatcher, now 100 yoa came to visit the radio room Wednesday. I hate that I was sick and not able to be there to meet him. The story is in todays (Thursday's) Birmingham News:

Birmingham's earliest police dispatcher, now 100, revisits department's all-digital radio room - al.com

Wow, & I thought I remembered "the old days"! I found an old Bearcat crystal scanner at a thrift store with 156.210 "KIB664" in it, (it didn't work) marked Birmingham Police CH-1. That's still an active license, wonder why they keep it? My first scanner was a BC210xlt & there were 3 UHF channels (KSQ471) - that was before they split "Central" into North/South.
Very nice story!

Talking KIB664 I remember

Ah.....KIB-664

My first monitoring experience. Tuning on a Midland multiband w/ no squelch.

What a hoot when the whole city was on 156.210

Then that "new technology" 460-mhz of 1970's. Tennelec I w/ 12-channel crystals

156.210 went to Bessemer PD. They used that frequency until recently switching to Jeff Co TRS.

Those were the days....

My first scanning was with a Heathkit tuner when the City of Warrior KIC-784, Leeds KIC-537 and JCSO Station 1 were all on 45.900

Now that was true "interoperability"! Kind of like on The Andy Griffith show - ever notice that old VHF-LO antenna on the squad car? Kind of off topic but has anyone noticed that desktop radio on the table just to the right of Andy's desk? Never used it during the shows entire run as far as I know.

Was really a great article Dave, I saved it for reference. And I thought that I was the oldest dispatcher still kicking! lol
