Unfortunately, GRE/Radio Shack scanners do not fully support the extended TSBKs, which results in them not being able to display information like the WACN, RFSS, Site ID and possibly System ID. They will still decode the messages and send them out through the CC dump, so you can use Pro96Com to get this information. They will also track group and private calls on the system normally. I believe Uniden scanners fully support the extended TSBKs, but I'm not sure.
Puzzleriddle, did you ever get Pro96Com running on the system? If you need any more help let me know. It would be great if you could let it run on each of the control channels for a couple of hours, and then post the log files. That info will tell us a lot about the system.

NO luck here.. haven't been able to get a cc yet could send ya my file that is made for the RS/GRE radios but I do think its because all I have are stock & portable antennas?. but I am up on the 5th floor here so I have no idea.

keep in mind with my exper. with vhf digital systems the power is down and not really good coverage from far away. perfect example is cullman county. when they switched over i lost them totally used to hear them super clean at my home all city pd's and the so. now its a strain to hear anything. another example is cullman ems (the ambulance service) l/c on analog pow there gone on digital. just keep that in mind.
from morgan: have heard that when switching from analog to digital the coordinators automatically reduce the output power because of interference issues.

This is indeed a relatively low power system. According to the license, most locations are limited to <60 watts ERP, and one is even limited to 34 watts ERP. After reading through some of the applications and petitions, Shelby County seemed to have quite a problem getting frequencies licensed due to potential interference to incumbent licensees, so they are using as low power as possible while still providing acceptable coverage.
However, given that this thing was heard in Calhoun and Marion counties, I would expect that you could hear at least one of the sites from Birmingham. Try concentrating on 160.050 and 155.190, as those are the two control channels heard in the past. I haven't heard anything since I was able to monitor 160.050 for about 15 minutes the other day, but there hasn't really been any tropospheric ducting going on either.
For anyone wondering, the Harris P25 control channels sound like this. Quite different from the Motorola P25 CCs many of you around Talladega, Calhoun and Etowah counties may be familiar with.

Heard a P25 control channel on 155.1900 on Friday Dec. 28 at around 6:30 PM in Calhoun County North of Jacksonville.
Using a Pro-96 the screen readout only showed 96: and it was showing a flashing Dg off/on in the top right of the screen.
Either it was not broadcasting a System ID or I wasn't able to get one for some reason.
Signal was around 35-50 % on the control channel.

I believe they are also licensed for 155.1975 MHz. as well.

It sounds like you simply can't hear the system from your location. The only thing that may help that is a better antenna tuned to the VHF range, outdoors preferably. Since they may not have all five of the sites running yet, I would periodically scan all of the output/CC frequencies to see if a closer site has been activated.
As far as I know there is no way to manually enter an unknown system into Pro96Com (it's not pro96 .com, by the way). It would be fairly pointless and would only make interpreting the data more difficult if you ever get to actually run it on the system.

I have all the freqs programmed in.. The best I could do with another antenna on the balcony outside.. but no good way to run the coax to the radio.. I have heard of people setting up a mag mount on a cooking sheet tho may just wait & see when the system gets fully installed if I can get a good signal on an cc then . Hmm does anyone have a uniden out there that may be having better luck than me so far??. may give me a good excuse to buy 1 lol
