Default encryption ?

The folks at ScannerMaster.com state they have trouble programming the Alaska State Troopers in scanners. They thought the Troopers may be using encryption. Does anyone here know if they do or not? I live on the Kenai Peninsula.

Thanks

Pretty hard for a complete newbie like myself to make heads or tails from the Data Base. Was hoping to find the answer before investing 5 bills.
Thanks

I have visited Alaska the last two summers and have been able to monitor AST on ALMR. This past summer I was on the Kenai Penninsula and in Seward, I think I saw thats where you were, and was able to monitor the system and hear the Troopers. I never heard anything that I could identify as specifically being Seward PD/FD though. One of your posts said that they had recently changed to ALMR what were they using before? What scanner are you using?

Hi Linn,
Thanks for the info. Yes I'm in Seward. I'm still trying to decide which scanner to buy. Up until now I just have an analog, but the local PD went digital and put an end to that. They were on 155.250.

I'm leaning towards a Pro197, If I can convince myself that I can get it programmed. It's all Greek to me.

A user called keito (Jose) found the Custom Frequency Tables listed in ALMR database page in latter part of 2003 using the brand new Pro-96 and the newly developed free Pro-96Com software developed by user Mikey60 (Mike Vander Veer).

If your scanner is Pro-96 or 2096, you will need Win96 Software to set these tables. If your scanner is GRE-500/600 or RS clone, set the TSYS to P25 Auto with at least a group wildcard or TGObjects for the tower you are using.

I think the newer Uniden scanners (396/996) need to be set correctly also, so carefully read the OM for those.

BTW, Welcome to the forum.

Red face

You shoudn't have a problem, recieving the troopers on the almr system here in AK. Just make sure you get the correct scanner. I currently own a dozen that are capable of doing so. I'm in anchorage ak. I also purchased and great psr500 from scanner master. You'll need the computer and info and software to program the scanner yourself, in order too get it right. What better place too get the info than here? Just check the resouces here. You won't be dissappionted.

Like 'gregmoss' said, you shouldn't have a problem monitoring the Troopers at the moment. Very FEW units have encryption enabled and most of the traffic is in the clear, as it's always been.... As long as you have a P25/Trunking capable scanner, you should be fine and it'll be a matter of correct programming which shouldn't be hard either.

Default scanner help

I was at Radio Shack today and looked at the Bearcat digital for 599.00 I have an old scanner that is not picking up anything. If I purchase this will I be able to hear the AST? I am in Wasilla-is there anyone that would be willing to help program or sell a scanner already programmed?

You can get one online for a lot cheaper than $600. You can probably find a BCD996 for around $500 new.
