What Scanner?

Sometime last fall (2006) I asked about scanners and was told the Radio Shack Pro 96 and 2096 were good ones for here in Alaska. Is that still true? Will they pick up the Fire Departments, police, RR, etc.? Or should I consider the Uniden? Are both of them pretty comparable?

Those models are good but the new models that replace those are coming out mid-October. You could wait and see how they perform but from what I've seen so far the new ones (PSR-500/PSR-600) are going to be absolutely great.

Of course, you could also wait for GRE to release the new ones and buy the older models for a lot less than they're going for now.

Either way, you should wait for 2-3 weeks more before you make any scanner purchase.
