Default Regency HX series drop in charger questions

I have a Regency HX-1000 scanner and just received a drop in charger (MA-549) and wanted anyone else to confirm the indicator lights sequence.

I had one that was purchased arounf the time I got the radio in 1985, but it was modified. Now, I wanted to return to the orginal charger to try to extend battery pack time.

What I remembered was when you inserted the radio, the red "Fast" light came on. When the pack was charged, it switched over to the green "Trickle" light. Problem was, if you operated the radio while in the charger, the "Trickle" rate couldn't keep up with the drain and the pack would go dead. You had to lift the radio up and drop it back in to reset the charger.

With this one, when I insert the radio, BOTH lights are lit. When the pack is charged, the red "Fast" lite starts to dim and then almost goes dark when (I assume) the pack is charged.

Is there a problem with this, or did Regency change the charger. This one is dated 1987.
