Watkins johnson receivers
Hi Guys
Who has/uses WATKINS JOHNSON receivers - and, if you do, can you share the following:
1) What WJ model(s) do you have?
2) What antenna(s) do you use your WJ's with?
3) Compared with the more common consumer type so-called "off-the-shelf" receivers/scanners, how do you find the selectivty and sensitivity of your WJ receiver?
WJ's 8617 type receivers are generally acknowledged as having comparitively average (if not below average) sensitivity compared with many modern consumer type receivers. As well, the bandwidth filter roll off's are not something to shout about either. But, on the selectivity side of performance characteristics, most WJ receivers made in the 1980's & early 1990's remain today, something that few of the most modern consumer type receivers/scanners can come close to .
The result: used/2nd hand WJ's are no poor "second-cousin" to modern consumer type receivers. Indeed, their design rationale, more often than not gives them real world performance spec's that are head & shoulders ahead of many modern day consumer type receivers.
