This is from a post that I made on the VR-500 yahoo group on the same subject a few years ago.
Please note that since the VR-120 doesn't have single sideband reception you can skip those references. However, you may be interested in the SWBC band limits.
The VHF & UHF band plans are much more detailed than I laid out. I only accomodated band segments of interest to me. You should look at the individual band plans and make your own determinations of which steps to use depending upon your listening interests.
The VR-500 can not handle all of the band plan channel steps correctly. That is why the segement - 144.00000 nfm 10 khz 2 meter ham - is set to 1/2 normal channel step. This segment is used in 20 KHz steps but the VR-500 won't step correctly here.
The rule for the VR-500, and I'm assuming the VR-120, is that the frequency divided by the step size needs to yield an integer dividend. In other words the answer has to be a round number with only zero's after the decimal point. If the answer ends in .500 or .2500 or something other than .0000, the scanner won't step correctly. This is true for many scanners, not just Yaesu.
