Okay, so I have been interested in getting my license for a long time, but I finally decided to bite the bullet and do it. I studied for the tech and general, and then I went and took the test. I ended up passing both the first night (last Thursday). Yesterday, I purchased a brand new Yaesu VX-8R with the GPS module, adapter, remote handset, DC cable, and a magnet mount for my vehicle plus an Antenna. I'm very happy with the radio, but I have to admit, I'm completely intimidated by it.

I guess being able to pass the tests means I understand this stuff on Paper, but actually holding the radio is a whole different issue. Any advice you guys / gals can offer would be greatly appreciated. I cannot wait to receive my callsign. It's not updated yet in the ULS database, but I'm hoping it will be there soon. In the mean time, I'm trying (without much success) to monitor other Hams, so I can get a feel for it.

Next month, I'm hoping to get a Yaesu FT-897D, plus an antenna setup for my home. This will be my main base station for the time being (unless y'all can think of a reason not to use that one.)

Best advice I can give: read the manual first, listen second. Learn the etiquette of amateur radio to avoid becoming a lid. Get the ARRL operating handbook and pick up the antenna book as well; you'll eventually want to read those.

Thumbs up

My best advice is, listen, listen, and listen some more. Find a local radio club to get to know some other hams. I'm sure that a few will step up to 'Elmer' you. (Help you to find out about proper operating procedure on the radio-VHF and HF) Makes the ham experience even better. Oh, did I mention--listen, listen, and listen some more?
Welcome to the world of ham radio,
Larry
