Not sure how this ended up in the Database discussion forum so I've moved it to Amateur Equipment.

There are many things wrong with this. But i would not consider D-Star secure in the least bit. There is not much in the way of equipment to monitor it but it's not secure to someone with a radio.

If you want to be secure go with something encrypted.

like the other poster stated, it is not secure, anyone with 400$ bucks to blow could easily monitor, however if you are going somewhere besides USA, Japan, Europe, it is very very doubtful there is going to be anyone to listen in. If you are going to be utilizing Simplex only meaning no one is going to be near you it would also work. I would only make this my choice though if you already had DStar equipment which would help you avoid any cost and also if this was going to be a short term solution, if you plan to use this for a while and there are people that want to monitor you, it would not take them to long to get a Icom D-star ready radio...

Depending where you are going; you may find yourself "donating" a couple of radios to a foreign border agent, or perhaps having to explain why you want to carry such radios into their country.

The UT-121 is for the IC-91A while the IC-U82 uses the UT-118 and both a for D-STAR only, not secure or encrypted. While it is true that D-STAR can not be decoded by any current scanner on the market any and all other D-STAR capable radios can and will decode D-STAR.

So, if you want or need encryption you had better go with something else and if you haven't already done so, I'd check with the laws, rules, and regulations regarding the use of radios in which ever country it is that you're planning on visiting.
