Default Has anyone tried the new FT-7900?

Finally I decided to change my old Kenwood TM-251E station, but after much reading on the internet about a replacement of the same class and with good sensitivity, I chose the Yaesu FT-7800, which claims to have very good heard on military air band and the other segments.

Now I see that Yaesu has just launched the new FT-7900, similar to above, but, has anyone tried it? Are you still getting good out of band? Any other alternatives? "Icom?. My interest is, in addition to Amateur radio, as extra pseudo receiver.

Thanks,

I don't know about "just launched" it has been out for a while now. I got one about a month ago from HRO for $249 including the remote extension kit. It's a great little radio, I am enjoying it alot. It receives much better all around then any of my scanners.

Have not seen that one yet. However, I was at Universal last weekend and they have a FTDX9000D on display.

I read, but not clearly speak of behavior in reception outside ham bands.

"Moved to the Amateur Equipment forum. Please take an extra few seconds to look over all forum titles and descriptions. Thanks. "

Sorry, but my question is not for the Amateur radio equipment, ask for their possible use as a receiver out of those bands, so I put it in this forum. Sorry again and thanks for moving this message to the appropriate forum.

"aharry", could you tell me how to behave in civil and military air bands?

I can't really speak to it because I can't ever find anything in MilAir in my area. I am about 50 miles from MacDill AFB in Tampa and 30 from the Avon Park Bombing Range (Tampa Aux). Maybe I am impatient.. but I can't search dead air for hours on end! How do people find stuff in the MilAir band?

Patience and the correct freqs to monitor I have been monitoring milair for over twenty years and find that a good outside dualband antenna, a really good receiver, and most of all---patience. I can run my Pro-163 for hours on end and maybe hear some air refueling. Used to hear the Gators a lot when they were stationed a NAS Atlanta. One of the pilots lived in my city and would do fly-overs to show his house. You will find the dyed-in-the-wool milair people with multiple radios and antennas. One of the best radios I've had for milair was my Icom 2720. If it had alphatags, I'd still be using it.

Apples and oranges my friend... If you got the $12k+ for an FT-DX9000, then you are far better off than I am.

I dont see how the 7900 is much different than the 7800... I dont know what the 7900 has in it for guts tho
