Default 2 Meter Radio Problem

I have an old Icom 229H 2 meter ham radio. It powers on and receives ok as long as the mike is disconnected. As soon as I plug the mike into the radio the display reads "OFF" and the sound stops and cannot be tuned. I unplug the mike and the display and sound goes back to normal. I took the connector at the end of the mike apart and it looks like all the wires are connected and not touching each other. Any ideas what the problem could be?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Bill

Is it the right microphone for the radio?

It sounds like the radio is perhaps tuned to an "out of ham band" frequency and when the mic gets plugged
into the 8 pin socket it is going into transmit which would cause the display to show the "OFF" status
as the radio band matrix and cpu is setup to do. There may be short inside the mic tx switch.

By any chance, could two wires be crossed in the mic connector?
The reason I ask, there are some radios that will not have recieve audio until you plug the mic in.
Is it possible your radio is one of those, the connector is wired wrong, it's working reverse of the way it's supposed to?

According to the manual, this radio's mic also has a CPU. It's possible that it's not being correctly initialized when plugging it in with the radio on. Try turning the radio off, then connect the mic, and then turn the radio on. It also indicates that the radio's internal battery is only good for around 5 years and problems may happen if it runs down. You should also check to see if this battery needs to be replaced.
