I went to a hamfest yesterday and they had the UV-3R for $60. They had a few display models so I finally got to play around with one. Very neat little rig and much smaller than I was expecting. I passed over picking one up yesterday since I can get a better deal buying directly from China on Ebay; ~$50 for the radio and a speaker mic.

When I buy one I'm going to upgrade the antenna and toss it in my go bag.

Don't forget to buy the programming cable, too.

You can only edit the alphatags via the serial interface. The software limits you to 6 characters, but you can manually edit the .dat file and do 7.

Default Baofeng UV-5R programming question

Is it possible to program this radio to work with a Motorola LTR trunking system?

I am an authorized user but was looking to get another radio that is lighter. Can't ask the Moto tech this question and my department wouldn't buy one, so this would be a great option.

I have the frequencies needed, but with an LTR system, DPL or CTSSS are not needed. How would it work with talkgroups ?

If this is not possible with this inexpensive of a radio, then I understand, just a thought from a newbie in this game.

thanks

Im going to pick up a UV-3R mark 3 ,...Ill be programming it manually
I have used the puxing 777 , i dont know how similar it will be , but my question is
is there a good step by step instructions online for manual programming... & can all the menu selections ,..like say for example the narrow/wide selection ,...can this be applied to specific stored channels individually ?
So could i store the frequency in chan one ,...with a narrow setting & channel two with a wide setting etc ?

You need the programming software to create the alpha tags. There are several places on the web that you can download.

Have fun!

My UV3r does NOT have alpha tags. The software has a spot for "future" use, but last I heard they don't have that capability.
