Default Programming repeaters on Baofeng UV-5RA

I am having trouble programming repeaters into my UV-5RA. I put the radio in frequency mode, and program the frequency (146.910) with an offset of 00.600 and - shift direcion and then save it to a memory channel. When I put it in channel mode, there is no "-" so I push the *scan button and it shows the same frequency (146.910) so it is effectively in simplex mode. I went into the menu and it showed the shift direction as "-" but the offset as "00.000". I put it back in frequncy mode, the frequency 146.910 is displayed with a "-" above it. I push the *scan key and it shows 146.310. Does anyone know how to get it to do that in channel mode? Can I program repeaters into memory channels in this radio with just the radio, since I don't have any software or programming cables.
