Mystery Repeater On 10M?

Ok, so I'm tuning around 10 Meters this morning and stop on 29.660 where I hear a repeater that is just slamming into my radio full bore, but I got noise from the traffic on my street and other things competing with my hearing.

I know I heard a 4 in someone's call who said he was mobile. I can't find the tone for this machine if there even is one and can't bring it up either. Could it be that propagation is only good enough for me to hear versus being actually able to work this repeater, or is it that I am just dumb enough not to be able to find the tone? Maybe there were two repeaters because I know I heard two different courtesy tones.

BTW, I'm hearing this machine from Chicago, IL.

Any helpers out here?

I heard there was a huge 10m band opening! Who knows where that rptr. could be? I'm not a 10 m. fan but I might listen.

That is a 10 meter repeater output frequency, so could be any number of repeaters. The WB2HWW repeater in NY City is on that frequency if I recall. Check out a repeater directory to help you pinpoint it, but it could have been the NY machine.

When the band opens you can hear signals from all over and that being a crowded frequency it could be just about anything, the only way to get a positive ID is to listen for it. Amateur stations must identify every 10 minutes while in operation which makes it considerably easier than a PS or commercial machine and some employ voice ID. Most however use CWID so you'll have to learn the code ( the easy way) or record it and look it up character by character (the hard way).

I thought 29.660 was supposed to be the FM simplex calling frequency? Why do they put repeater outputs there?

29.600 is FM simplex. Listen and call CQ when the band is open. Its lots of fun.

That list is way obsolete. The Dallas repeater hasn't existed for over 15 years.
29.66 is now in located in Fort Worth with the callsign W5DFW. PL is still 192.8 but normally runs in CSQ.
