Radioshack cable and Icom 208H...HELP!

Guys,

I have an Icom IC-208H and I have my Radioshack 20-047 cable..I have read that they can be used together with the cs208 software to program the radio.

I have tried using the stereo and mono plugs and cannot get the radio to read...I have set the com port to 9, which is what shows up under device manager on my computer which is running XP.

Any ideas what Im doing wrong?

I've never heard that before, and cannot find any supporting information on the internet, But I am eagerly awaiting the answer...

Never heard that one about the RS cable.

As far as I know you need either the icom opc-478 or the alinco erw-4c cables to get it to work.

The older DB9 serial cable that is used to program Icoms/Yaesus, paired with a stereo to mono 1/8" adapter can be used to program the older RS scanners. Not the reverse.

There was a writeup in the October 2008 QST magazine by WB2GYK about it...I cant find any more information about it...

Im thinking it should work...since it is a usb to ttl interface...just like the OPC-478U cable...

I did find an article in the archive... But the crooks at ARRL dont have it online so you can download it, you have to buy the periodicals in CD form



Another reason I LOATHE the ARRL...

If I remember correctly you have to use three ring plug and build a null modem pigtail to reverse tx and rx.

The article you mention is for connecting to an IC-7000, so I don't know that it will work with the 208H.

It doesn't mention needing a different wiring, just says he uses the stereo-to-mono converter supplied with the interface.

The interface settings used in the HRD software were:
COM Port = Auto-detect, Speed = 19200, CI-V Add = 70, DTR = not checked, RTS = not checked

Not sure if that helps any...

Edit: The author also says he first found out about this on the IC-7000 Yahoo group.

Note that the IC-208H uses a different cable than the IC-7000 uses.

Since the 20-047 cable apparently uses the tip of its TRS plug for both TX and RX signals and the Icom IC-208H uses the ring section for both TX and RX signals, I would think that a fabricated cable adapter pigtail to be used with the 20-047 would have a TRS jack on one end and a TRS plug on the other end. The sleeve sections would be connected together and the tip section of the jack would be connected to the ring section of the plug.
