We do not ask for radio checks often as that is chicken band crap. being a responsible operator we know how our equipment is doing without repeating our self's.

Using repeaters is considered "chicken band crap" by many hams. Maybe that's why many rpeaters are dead?

There are some things that instrumentation won't tell you. Being able to listen over-the-air can help a lot, especially when making adjustments to audio levels and compression.

Well slap my face to wake me up. if you would pick up a technician book and read it it will explain why we have repeaters. I have never heard a ham operator say repeaters are chicken band crap lol.

I'm having a helluva time trying to figure out what your
reply to k3cfc has to do with local amateur repeaters
being dead in some areas and repeating "our selfs"

I know "chicken banders" that have technical and operating skills that surpass many hams. When I listen to repeaters, I hear many operators that keep the amateur in amateur radio. Listen to traffic nets, they are the worst.
Pass a multiple choice test and suddenly everyone is a radio authority.......
Chicken Band, Indeed

LOL!! Funny thing is that many hams actually started out on the Chicken Band! If you ever listen to the RadioReference live audi feed from the 147.435 LA repeater, you will hear foul language and sordid subjects that are even worse than you will find on the CB band!

So how do you know the equipment works without ever doing radio checks?

If for some reason I suspect that things are not working as they should, I don't have a problem asking someone if they can tell me. If I don't have any reason to wonder if things are not acting right, I also don't usually waste my time, or theirs for a 'check'. All that also depends on if someone -could- tell anything about what I suspect -might- be wrong. It also depends on just how 'important' a particular conversation is, or if the frequency or repeater is busy or not. It just takes a little thought and common courtesy, you know?

I did not say we never ask i said not often. ham equipment is expensive to buy and repair so we keep it in good repair. unlike chicken band where %99.98 don't have a clue as how to check anything just key up and talk. i have heard on cb asking for a radio check and some genius comes back and says you are sounding good and it is the worst sounding P.O.S. radio you have ever heard of. now getting back on topic i don't know why repeaters are dead but i can say i have stayed off two meters because of the kerchunkers. we have a person on the 09 repeater in williamsport pa and he is a problem so when he gets on the repeater the kerchunkers show up and then the *****en and i just don't want to listen to it so off it goes.
Hope this explains what you want to know.

As a kid about 15 or 16 years old my dad had a CB in his station wagon,I had fun even wrote to the FCC for a license that maybe cost 5 bucks?! I think the old call was KBIE9921 long time ago.

Many years ago, when the voice ID stuff first appeared, many of us wondered how many would just tune elsewhere to avoid the noise. Some folks may have done this, while some other have not... difficult to say.

I probably would prefer simplex as well but how far is the range HT to HT? When I get general and a HF radio with some wattage well then!!!
