There are so many kinds of mobile antennas - a very simple one would be to get the 1/4 wave Larsen sells (I think...) and cut the whip down for the frequency range you're interested in with a simple formula 234/f(mhz) where f(mhz) is the frequency in Mhz.

Are you looking for something specific - a 5/8 wave, collinear - what? 73 Mike

A coil is only needed to electrically reduce the length of an antenna. You can make a simple antenna without a coil.

I went to Radio Shack and bought a cheap mag mount cell phone antenna with a BNC connector. It cost less that $20 and doesn't blow off the roof. Can't hear stuff 100 miles away but when you're mobile, you want local stuff anyway. I can listen to VHF and UHF plus 800mHz without a problem.
