improved sma antenna

I have a br330t radio and want to get better reception in the 110-170 freq range want to stay close to stock antenna length. I purchased a Maldol ht-55 antenna for the municipal range and it works the same or less then the stock antenna. Might be willing to go to 10" in length max but I mostly use the radio portable.
Please help their are to many choices to choose from and I don't feel like sending back every antenna.
I read a good review on the maldol mh-255 antenna but most of the user had digital radios and I think that my radio has better non digital reception in the range I will be using in.
