Default Mounting Question

Would it be acceptable to mount a 5.6 ft. Comet GP-3 antenna to a 5 ft. steel mast and then mount it to a roof vent pipe? Could I go 10ft. on the mast? The vent pipe is about 3" in diameter and about 12-14" high and is metal. Its the pipe that vents the bathroom fan.

Other option is chimney mount, but I heard the straps break easily unless you have other suggetions on how to mount to a chimney.

Thanks for the suggestions.

those vent pipes are flimsy as heck.

I ran a 4 element 2 meter quad made out of PVC (heavy as hell, about 40 lbs) and a 7 foot vertical on a rotator and 2 5" sections of mast on a chimney mount for 6 years, never missed a beat. Inspect the straps annually and it'd be wise to put an extra steel retaining cable around the chimney bolted to the antenna mast - that'll at least save it somewhat if the straps break. Run it around about where the straps are and clamp it very securely to the mast.

Chances are if a strap breaks it'll be the top one, so this will at least keep it in the air after the winds, rather than having it all crash down on your front lawn.

Vent pipes aren't strong enough.

I second the chimney mount recommendation only if you don't want to
drill holes in your roof for a tripod mount

Spray the straps with some extra spray galvanizing spray before installation
and plan on replacing them in a couple of years if you live in a severe weather
environment.

Can I go with a 10' mast on the chimney as long as I put 2' against the chimney and separate the straps by like 10"? I am holding off on the tripod since I am getting a new roof next summer and would have it torn off anyway. If I go chimney I am thinking they can work around it and I can just unhook the coax while they do their thing.

I have one chimney mount and 3 tripods.

I don't see why not.
