Sure would be nice if they would spend some time bringing the 8200 up to date instead of releasing a receiver no one will buy!!

I've got a 10 year old AOR AR-16 that'll do everything the AOR Mini will do , and look a lot cooler doing it. So , how far has AOR came in the last 10 years ? ? ?

The mini looks like a different labeled R-5 and more expensive.

Looks like an R5 to me as well.

AOR has done nothing in the past ten years with the exception of releasing very expensive nitch product driven towards military or government. None of these are within the average enthusiast's reach let alone relevant to the hobby.

WAKE UP AOR!! I know you read this………. Remember all those people who put you on the map buying the 8200 series receivers???? We are now giving our money to GRE or Uniden.

They were 'on the map' long before the AR8200 was released and have always aimed their products towards the higher end of the hobby market not the budget end.

Yes I am sure my purchases of the AR16, AR900, AR3000 & AR8000 had nothing to do with putting them on the map either! Then still having faith in them to buy an AR8200, 8200MKII & MKIII let alone the 8600. I’ve paid my dues to the AOR coffers.

AOR would be no where without the success of the 8200! Those sales to the “hobby market” fund research and development for things like the AR ONE, SD, 5000 & 7000. Think BMW can keep the doors open only selling 7 series? Nope! They need the 3 series sales………. AOR needs the 8200 sales.

And since when is spending $500 on a receiver, $125 for a cable, $100 each for cards, $30 each for cases budget???? Maybe you have not noticed the price of milk, bread & gas. The “budget end” of us don’t have the funds to pay $279.95 for a Mini when a Pro-97 can be had for $100 and cover the same basic bases.

If anything many of us here in the "budget" bit of the hobby are selling off things like the 8200 to buy PSR-500’.s. Something that is relevant to today’s hobby market.

a vr-120 / r5 for 3x the price and 5 years late is pretty weak

i mailed aorja about SSB and got no response..

im really close to building my own wideband rcvr on a usb stick using these new tiny 0-3.3ghz oscillators

Let us know when you do get a working model. I'm sure there are those of us that would be knocking at your door to get one!

With Icom's new IC-RX7, it looks like AOR bought the ICR5 rights and repackaged the radio. I purchased an 8200 once and took it back in few days. It was the most poorly put together radio I' ever owned! I don't understand the draw to AOR equipment.

I believe that what put AOR on the "map" was it's sales of the FANTASTIC ar-3000 receiver to the government. This radio has been and IS STILL is sold the US GOVT. It is a very good radio. It is sales of this unit that fueled the R and D necessary to develop the 8200 series of HT's.
I still own and use my ARO 8000 and love them. Talk about a FINE receiver. I receive a load of stations in the uhf band with NO antenna installed.

Hobby sales pale in comparison to government (not just US) sales of quality receivers.


AOR seems to be a bit behind the times. the fact in that UNIDEN hold so many patents on scanning receivers it forces other companies to either licience the technology or reinvent the technology need to make a radio scan. The big problems are related to scanning speed. outside of GRE and UNIDEN all other scanners are SLOW.
There is also this apco 25 mode that seems to cost so much to implement.

It is time for AOR to get back into devoloping new radios that scan fast and have apco 25.
I doubt we will see this from aor anytime soon.
Hell Look at this "new" armini. Clearly a rebadged ICOM R5.

I got the AOR-3000/3000A/8200MK3 and they are excellent radios on performance and u have to remember they supply there receivers to goverement/defence agencies worlwide and a few years ago i went to have a look at an Air Force base and there communications equipment was from AOR/ICOM/JRC

I just saw this advertised yesterday for the first time. Two VFOs would be nice, but:

- no ssb?
- no keypad?
- 8 steps/sec?

Sorry, but no go. The VR-500 looks like a more capable receiver.
