I beleive that OPTOELECTRONICS made and maybe still has a universal interface for the aor-8000.
This unit was about $100 and allowed interfacing computers with many radios including the 8000. It also included the flat cable.
with software and this interface you had complete (as complete as possible in those days) controll and the ability to remap the band plan, scan control as well as memory management.

Iyt turns out that it costs $200.00 maybe you can find one used?
In any event this is THE best interface of it's kind. I could be wrong but I beleive that it may even have a data slicer built in..
