You should be able to get it with the stock anntenna. I am in peoria (75th/Olive) and just tested the stock anntena.
Monitering control channel 867.2125 (currently active), and 867.9625
I do regularly use the radio shack 25$ antenna - part number 20-176 works good for me for 'everything'.

ctrl, do you use free scan? Can I see how yours is set up? Yes, I have always rec'd well with the stock antenna, that is what is mystifying me. Something is programmed wrong and I can't figure it out. The band width, whatever lcn is, etc.
I have spent hours researching on here and trying different things to figure it out. I have tried so many different set ups. It should be easy. Set up a system, download the frequencies and groups, and it should work. I don't know if it is the pc set up, attentuation, modulation, it is frustrating. I have spent my whole weekend on this. It's worked fine for a year with no problem and wham, it quit working. I can get surprise as clear as day, and aren't they a part of rwn?

Milo, I'd love to help you, but my free scan is set up for my 396. I don't know if the setup is going to be the same for the 996. But, if you think it will work, I'll be glad to e-mail you my profile. I live at 43rd Ave & Glendale, and I have no problem listening to the entire RWC.
If you can hear Surprise, then there is nothing wrong with your scanner as they are on the RWC. So, I'm thinking that one llittle thing has changed for the Phoenix talk groups. And, by the way, Phoenix is doing testing on a new control channel/site. Depending on where you are, this may help your reception.

I have a BCD396T which was programmed where it was purchased. I have always had reception issues, so had been using the preprogrammed system key 22 and had saved C deck talk groups and Surprise and El Mirage, simply because the reception was clearer. Like you, I lost Phoenix, Surprise and El Mirage are still operation on the above key. I live north of 99th and Bell. I can't really help, since I have no ability to fix my own. I went back to the original, scratchy as it is. I just thought it might help to know that you are not alone.

Sunrise, thanks goodness, I thought I was going crazy. How long ago did you lose Phoenix? I lost it around Wednesday last week. I live at 75th Ave and Beardsley so I am very close to you. Yeah, can get Surprise, El Mirage, Peoria, but nothing from Phx. I lost the original programming from where it was purchased. Would you email it to me? I will send you a pm. So your post confirms there is an issue on this side of town. Suggestions, anyone? BTW, I also have a Uniden 396T.

Since you are hearing El Mirage and Surprise PD, you are likely listening to Simulcast-E site. In the past, some phoenix channels were always transmitted on Simulcast-E site. This appears to have changed recently. Now you will only here Phoenix PD channels active on Simulcast-E when a user roams onto this site.
To listen to Phoenix you will need to be sure you have the Simulcast-A system active in your scanner.

cellphone, that is exactly what I am picking up - simulcast-E so that makes perfect sense. I rec'd Phoenix before but it was hit and miss. I have Simulcast A and not receiving transmissions. Do you think something has changed that I now need an antenna for reception?

Fellas,
You only need 2 control channels, the ones I listed. They are infact the ONLY ones that carry all the traffic all the time. Messing with the others is totally pointless as they only carry traffic that is affiliated at that moment.
FYI, Both the ones I listed work perfectly from your locations..
Edit your phoenix system-- Remove all the control channels and just put the 2 I listed.
Someone should add this 'information' into the DB. The rest of the sites are pointless for scanning.
Just my 2cents.

Oh Sorry! I usually refrain from using gender specfic comments. Due to that reason. You know what they say about assumptions.
Also to clairfy-- When I said all traffic all the time, I meant for phoenix alone.
To save on headaches my suggestion would be to create seperate systems (and quick keys) for surprise and phoenix. I suppose to make things easier you could re-add the frequencys you deleted so you get surprise again on this system.
You can Hold on any system, and type in the freq - 867.2125 and hit HOLD again. Look at the signal meter on the screen. To put it in cell phone speak-- How many bars do you have?? 1 Should be enough to recieve it.
If you have any 'bars' create a new p25 system for phoenix, add the 2 frequencys I listed. And set it to Search Mode. Give this a try, to see if you can get anything to happen.
If you can try these things, im sure it would help to narrow out the problem. Good Luck!

OK, I did as you suggested, can get peoria and surprise again.
And I put hold on that frequency and got ZERO bars, just a lot of loud noise. Do you think I should just go to radio shack and get the antenna you mentioned and hook that up? perhaps where i live i cannot receive the control channel? i truly appreciate your helping me troubleshoot this.
