Default Help programing State Police on 396XT

I posted this in the beginners section. Someone suggested I might get better luck here

I am very new to all of this. I have read a lot and lurked her. Thanks to this board I have my scanner up and running pretty well. I have a lot I do not understand and really do not have the vocabulary yet. But there is one thing I want to do that I do not understand.

I live in Little Rock, AR, Pulaski County, I want to monitor the State Police They are using what I believe to be a P25 system of some sort which is listed as AWIN (Arkansas Wireless Information Network) When I look at this in Freescan it brings in a lot of confusing data. There seems to be a lot of "Systems" on the left hand side and a lot of "Talk groups" on the other. I very well may not understand the terms.

I am really interested in Troop A (my area) but it would be sweet if I could listen to other areas as well, I programed my radio with one "System" (Chenal Mtn) and picked several groups from the right side. I do not hear any traffic.
Can someone please give me a clue? I appreciate any help you can give this noob

Clay

What kind of scanner are you using? I live in the Little Rock area and Listen to State all the time. My BCD396T works well. Just have to know what your doing. I just need to know what radio your using so I can help program it for you. I think the BCD396XT is the base model. If so I think the programming it just about the same. email me at brandon564@hotmail.com I will give you all the info you need do you listen to NLR PD? If so I also have all the 9 codes.

Thanks for the reply. I have a 396XT. I am up and running in Pulaski County. I can also monitor ASP Troop A. I am just trying to understand AWIN. I see that there are a bunch of repeaters(?) around the state. When I download the DB in Freescan, I get a list of a whole bunch of MP25 sites. I assumed these related to different repeaters (towers). On the right is a very long list of talk groups.

I assumed that I could pick 1 system, Chenal Mountain, and then pick a bunch of talk groups, like all of the State police groups. Then all of the State Police traffic (each talk group) could be monitored by this one system (Chenal). Apparently, I am wrong. Can you help?

Default Troop J

Amen on the AWIN programming of ASP in my area (Danville) I tried what clayk did in the orig post and no ASP Troop J. Yes I'm new but early programming successes left me over confident. Now I'm stumped
