Or just invest in the best scanner around made by GRECOM:
GRE PSR-500 Police Scanner Radio
GRE PSR-600 Police Scanner Radio
RadioShack PRO-106 Police Scanner Radio
RadioShack PRO-197 Police Scanner Radio
The Radio Shack versions are identical on the guts/inside as the GRE's. The RS version's are made by GRECOM, just brand named for RS. Both are pricy, but very much worthy of the cost in many aspects. Radio Shack has sales on their versions. So depending on how quickly you want one, or if your willing to wait for RS sale on their versions, depends on how much you are willing to pay. Last Christmas, RS had a sale, discounting the scanner $200. One draw back to RS version's, they don't come with the USB cable used to program the scanner whereas the GRE version does come with it. The additional cable cost of a little over $30 is a negative as far as cost goes from RS. That's why I chose the GRE version when researching.
I have a PSR-500 and have no negatives on getting AWIN/State Police and more, local Counties, and local Trunked systems or Conventional freqs here in the Ozark hills of Marion County and surrounding Counties. Sweeper has picked up on systems/freqs miles away from a repeater. Speaker volume and clarity is awesome on the GRE versions. And I have read RS versions sound quality is good also.
I listed ScannerMaster for dependability on delivery, quality, and customer service. Stay away from eBay sellers. Reading too many complaints from a few buyers about sellers..
Also invest in new antenna for hand-helds. I use the
Diamond RH77CA Amateur HT Antenna and couldn't be happier with it's reception abilities.
I also use the
PSREdit500 - Configuration Editor for the PSR-500, PSR-600, Pro-106, and Pro-197 Scanners, again for dependability, quality, ease of use, and customer service, to program the scanner and keep things organized.
