Both the BCD396XT and the GRE Pro-500 are great scanners (handheld if you want mobile/base scanners I can give you the model # to those). Both are going to run you about $500. give or take a few bucks.

Programming? The best way to do the programming (in my opinion) is to subscribe to this website and buy the programming software and program yourself. You can use the software to auto download the info you want from the database.

If that isn't an option, then you might look at scannermaster.com they will program it for you.

The newer Uniden BCD996XT mobile and the BCD396XT portable COME PRELOADED with Arkansas AWIN.

The older Uniden BCD996T mobile and BCD396T portable DO NOT COME PRELOADED with Arkansas AWIN.

I use the both of the older Uniden scanners and I subscribe to this website.

I use freescan programing software to program my scanners I traveled to Nebraska a few weeks ago and programed all the Counties I drove thru
from Jonesboro,Ark. to Omaha,Ne the BCD996T, BCD996XT and BCD396XT scanners use GPS to turn areas on and off as you drive no need to touch scanner except to lock out some unwanted channel or talk group.

A gps unit that plugs into the back of the scanner does not come with the scanner.

My take on the new radios and I live just across the line in Kennett.

I've had my Pro-197 since 12/08 and I'm very pleased with it. But, I just bought a Uniden BCD996XT last week and it picks up digital stations that my 197 has never picked up and they're on the same antenna. I do think the 197 does a little better on conventional and LTR stations than the Uniden. The RS Pro-197 cannot pick up the Jonesboro tower here, but my Uniden does. AWIN seems to have low power for Jonesboro traffic and it doesn't use any of the other towers. I get the ASP Troop C & Craighead County loud n clear on the Hopewell and the Burdette Towers.

You have to make enough posts to gain the PM ability. You should be fine now.

The 996XT is an excellent radio. You can use freescan (I think).

I use ARC XT and really like it a lot. You can download it and try the trial version and see what you think. Butel Software

If you go with the Radio Shack Pro-96 (handheld) they can probably program it for you.
(at least they can do that here in LR)

I forgot about that. Some Radio Shacks will program the scanner. They may program the newer scanners?

I have heard recently that the Radio Shack Pro-106 and Pro-197 are about to go back on sale again, for under $300.
