Because they are idiots in a hurry!

One time i was in a friends car and there was an idiot ahead of us.. SHE SPED UP AND THEN SLOWED DOWN AND THE GUY GOT OUT OF HIS CAR AND CAME BACK TO THE ONE I WAS IN!! (I was scared he might do something)

Road rage is not advisable anymore,YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THEY MIGHT HAVE!!

Here's a very effective way to get rid of tailgaters, aka "Prius Repellant":

These signs are all around Oregon.
Dunno if they do any good or not:

That's a great way to word that.

In my state and the ones surrounding it, those signs say "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT"

I always thought that wasn't clear enough.

Not defending aggressive people, but moving right would solve many road rage/tailgating incidents. If you're being passed on the right and not making a left exit/turn anytime soon, you're in the wrong lane.

It's also illegal to occupy the left lane on many highways in Florida unless passing but it's probably not enforced at all. Our highway patrol can't even handle all the crashes that come in, let alone be proactive.

It's also REALLY STUPID to drive in the fast lane, especially at night. What lane is that drunk wrong way slow poke driver going to be driving home in? HIS slow lane, which will happen to be YOUR fast lane.....

Good point. Never thought of that. If I'm all alone in the middle of nowhere, I'll run the fast lane figuring that if a deer shoots across from the right, I'll get another 1/2 second to react. That may not be much, but it might.

The tailgaters that really irritate me are the one's who have just *GOT* to get around, no matter what the consequences, CHOP me off ... then exit off the very next road! You've gained NOTHING and risked all of our lives, dumb ***.

They've been busy putting in HOV lanes (so the buses can poke along in them at 50mph) and Toll lanes but what they really need is a Diarrhea lane. It's the lane reserved just for people that need to get to the bathroom urgently.

And maybe if they are clearly marked "diarrhea lane" then people who are just out for a nice sunday drive will stay out of them.

THIS is the answer!!

To all of you on two lane roads in the left lane going whatever speed you like (typically 5-10 under), MOVE OVER. I HATE passing people on the right, it is not proper and can be dangerous.
I used to think this was only NYC or NJ weekender morons on the NYS Thruway, but I see this problem exists all over.

Regardless of how passionate com501 is about this subject, HE IS 100% CORRECT.

If I am being "tailgated" I slow down, a little under the speed limit.

If I think its an emergence, or if they indicate it is an emergence, I will pull over, and let them pass

If it is not an "emergence", I dont know why they "tailgate", but it is illegal.

There is a person I know, who was tailgating a "Natchez Trace Park Ranger"-National Park service-and he got a ticket. The Patrol car was well marked and with lights on top. Why he did that, I dont know. I laughed about that.

There was another person in this area, that received a ticket for tailgating a Polce officer. I dont know if that vehical was marked or not.

How nice of you to create a roadblock and slow everyone else down who isn't tailgating you. What is someone supposed to do to let you know it's an emergency? Civilians aren't allowed to put flashing lights on their car in most places. And from what I can tell watching cop shows, even if they did half the time people don't get out of the way anyhow.

Driving a little, under the speed limit, does not creat a roadblock. And it is not illegal. Tailgating is illegal.

You stated, "what is someone supposed to do to let you know its an emergency".

Well there is a little button on cars that when pushed makes the tail lights and park lights flash on and off---flashers. That is what would let me know that it is an emergency!

Oh, you get your imformation from watching "cop shows". lol. lol. That is a good one

Driving with your hazards on is illegal in most jurisdictions. In my state, once you collect five cars behind you, no matter what your speed, you are supposed to pull off and let them pass. It's like that in most states. And yes, intentionally disrupting the flow of traffic by creating a traffic hazard (in your case you stated you intentionally created a roadblock) is illegal. Actually, that's a more serious offense than tailgating, and could potentially be considered incitement to road rage in some jurisdictions.

Why would you do that? Are you some righteous person that thinks everyone should follow your example? Is it your toll road? If it is, then you can do what you want, you really DO own the road.

Your statements are not true. TAILGATING IS ILLEGAL.

Did I say anywhere that tailgating is not illegal?

What you are doing is also illegal, and potentially far more dangerous, since it could incite a road rage incident.

Does everyone in the south only drive on two lane roads and drive like that? I hope not....

Oh sorry that wasn't in the driver's manual. Was it recently added?

I don't like being tailgated any more than you do but the safest thing to do is to give them a chance to get by at the earliest opportunity because if you don't, they're only going to get more impatient and could end up doing something that jeopardizes the safety of many other people on the road just to get by. Next time you're playing judge and jury of of who gets to pass you, think about that. The person probably had to be at work 5 minutes ago and will try to make up the time somewhere. Maybe by running a light, maybe by blowing through a stop sign, maybe by turning a cyclist into mincemeat.
