• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Anybody else experience A no sound problem with the UV-5R. The audio was working good, then nothing. The led green light comes on when receiving, but not even the voice prompt or the key beep produce any sound. I tried the ear buds that came with it also and nothing. Any advice ?

You could try reinstalling the software as a possible reset? Or, check the volume knob that may be broken. I have a TYT handi talkie and it's been good for over a year and a half now, but I have to agree that it's a cheapie like yours, so if it went tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised.

Kenny-
I have one, got it about six months ago. About three weeks later, I had the same problem. Being the electronics tech I am, I went ahead and carefully opened it up and found one of the speaker wires had come loose from the solder point on the speaker. I also discovered the other wire just barely soldered on as well. Resoldered both with success. IMO, it's not worth sending back for warranty unless you purchased it from a U.S. dealer. Mine came direct from China. Good luck with it.

No, took it totally apart, could not see anything visually wrong. It's now just a paper weight with nice lights. Have a new UV-3R for Christmas, will see if I have any better luck with this one.

This issue usually happens with the microphone. There is a "substance" that is put in the jacks at the factory to make them water resistant. When a plug is inserted in the socket of the radio (speaker/mic or programming cable), contacts are lifted to disable the internal mic and internal speaker. During this time, the "substance" either melts or flakes off and gets under the contacts. Then when the plug is removed, the contacts are blocked from returning to their normal position and the device (mic and/or speaker) continues to be disabled. You might give the procedure on the miklor.com FAQ page a try. It is for the mic jack. The speaker jack is smaller so it will be harder to do.

For a $40.00 third rate Chinese radio, how long did you expect it to work?

And none of the major electronics brand names have any products made in China...

I have 6 of them and no failures so far.

Same problem for me too. No speaker sound, everything else was fine. Very frustrating. Then I plugged in the speaker mic jack and pulled it in and out a few time and presto. It works again. Such a relief. Good luck.

hmm, I was about to say there was one UV5R version (N5R-20) which will not play audio unless you had the "beep" enabled in the menu despite the green led showing that it is receiving. Strange bug, I know.

But you say it has worked in the past and now nothing?

*IF* you recently disabled your "beep", try turning it back on. If that isn't a thing, I hope you figure it out! I know how frustrating it can be.

Hot swapping the speaker/mic and programming cable can also kill in internal audio…seen it happen a lot. Have yet to see it happen on cold swapped accessories.

No Volume Fixed - Baofeng UV-5RE

My volume was totally gone after programming my UV-5RE with the cable/computer. To fix it I merely plugged, unplugged, plugged, unplugged, etc. the cable a few times and it came back. Seems like a mechanical issue with the headphone jack.
