"Game Changer"?
The only thing I will think is a game changer is when someone puts out a quality software defined radio that does 30-512MHz or more, reliably, cheaply and gets it FCC type accepted as such.
In the meantime, I'll stick with my: Harris Unity, Motorola and Japanese radios.
These cheaper radios have managed to get a lot more people interested in radio, but the growing pains get annoying fast. Anything is better than nothing, but I tell people that this is a lot like buying a new Hyundai or a two year old BMW.
A co-worker of mine says his Hyundai is a quality made car, and then mentions how the transmission is going out with only 103 thousand on the odometer. This same guy bought Beofeng and Youxon radios and several of them failed after a few months. (With no warranty or repair options, unless he attempts it himself.) Well in comparison, I bought a used GM car when he bought his Hyundai. Now at 135k on the odometer, it is still going strong. Likewise, my used Motorola and Japanese radios have yet to fail me.
