• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Anyone has the UV-5X3 ... using it in scanning?

While I primarily use Moto XTS and Astro Saber radios, with 396/996 scanners, I'd like something pocket sized and somewhat disposable for certain applications. It is not always practical to shove an XTS3000 in your pocket.

I tried the UV-5R and UV-82 for scanning a long time ago, they were awful, but Baofeng now saw scanning is improved on the UV-5X3 ... so any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I received mine today. It's my first such radio. I'm using it to scan local stations as I type this. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems to work fine for my purposes.

Not good as a scanner. Slow as the old one. Just added new features. Good for amateur repeater scans by hams; but not anything else.

A wise man once said that when you have a radio with a front end as wide as a barn door, it doesn't do a very good job of discriminating between noise and the signal you wish to monitor.
If you really want to monitor a bunch of non amateur radio frequencies and you do not want a radio that suffers from pager overload, or just general over load of the front end, you do not choose one of those cheap Chinese radios.
I have a very old Uniden / Radio Shack handheld scanner that has excellent battery life and a very sensitive front end. The sensitivity is actually better then the Uniden BearCat 890XLT.
The audio is not very loud, and it is almost the size of a brick, but it has given my family 30 years of faithful service with no complaints.

I was looking at it for just 6 channels, that's it, a mix of UHF and VHF. This way when I'm just wandering around I don't need three Minitor pagers or two XTS3000 radios ... for $50.

Three days using the UV-5X3 scanning just five channels and it is great. Given that it is nearly the same size as a Minitor IV , and with the 2.5" Nagoya NA-810 antenna, it is still tiny , I may end up using it ... although I wish it had the alert beeps from two-tone.

Stick to your Xts. There is no comparison!
