• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi :)

I just bought a Boafeng GT-3WP that I want to use as marine VHF in my small boat. I used chirp to program the channels I want, but I cant receive traffic..

Anybody knows this radio? Do I have to change parameters in the menu?

I'm totally new to radio programming so I will be very happy for all help :)

Definitely not the radio for the job but I'll let everyone else beat that dead horse. Did you happen to program a receive ctcss tone? Also, how are you testing the recieve out? Just by generally listening or do you have another radio to test against?

Thanks for the reply :)

I got it working now..

BTW: I know this is a cheap China radio, so I only bought it to test if it's worth the 30 bucks ;)
But what will I get if I spend some more on a quality brand?

Yeah that's why I wasn't going to preach about it haha. I use my vertex vx150 on marine channels myself. A handheld will do okay on the water. I usually get a couple miles easily. The biggest deal with using that radio is that it's not FCC part certified for that service. Therefore it's illegal to transmit with it. Will you get caught? Likely not, but the fines can be heavy if you are.

I'm considering buying a pre-programmed VHF handheld from the official Norwegian telecom company, but I just wanna play around with this radio first and see how it is doing..

I have downloaded Chirp and tried program it my self. But there are lots of parameters that confuses me ;)

Not sure if I have done it right..

If you use Tone/Tone sql, then you don't use DTCS. Their function is the same, with DTCS being digital and tone/tonesql being analog.
