I spent all day yesterday covering the story in Big Bear. The information from SBSo was limited and the updates were infrequent. We were kept quite far from their command post, and they instituted a TFR over Big Bear.
We were listening to the 8-Mountain-1 all day, but watching the stream of cars roll into Big Bear, we saw units as far away as Irvine and LAPD, as well Federal Agencies like FBI and ICE, I can't help but wonder how you coordinate all those resources with a trunked radio system?

That's what InterOp is supposed to be all about. It's also something that gets *****ed about on this board all the time. Agencies seem to be moving away from it and into scrambled and/or proprietary systems where nobody can talk to anybody else.
At least with older systems, you could get on somebody else's frequency and talk to them. In a lot of cases, they can't even do that now. Will a Harris radio even talk to a Motorola?

Because it isn't MY job. The vehicle was known, and the plates were provided. Don't make excuses!

Double Homicide suspect from OC ex cop on run in Riverside. Just shot 2 PD
With regard to comms. I doubt that The SB system is being used for comms with other agencies. I don't want to be shelling out any ideas for frequencies, but at the
same time, I don't think you'd have to look too far to find what they would use.

I was hearing traffic early this morning around 2am on 8-1 that sounded like units covering each other, warbling audio. It went on for over an hour. Any idea what that was? You could almost make out the conversations.

where is Big Bear Lake feed?
Hi all, I usually just listen to the Chicago feed here (lived there a long time and it's nostalgic) but this story has had me glued to the So.Ca. channels since yesterday. One question though - why can't I find the Big Bear Lake feed on the site? I am listening to it currently with TuneIn Radio instead. I registered here just to ask this.. so, hello everyone.
also, I have developed a film treatment I am going to pitch to Hollywood about this story. It stars L.L. Cool J as Chris Corner and also features Bruce Willis, Jackie Chan, and Charlie Sheen. I would tell you more but I need to copyright it first :-o
(it's a joke, but I actually have written a page or two of this just for kicks! The real story is just so bizarre it begs for Hollywood to sensationalize it even more. )

Are the agencies trying to keep this quiet, so they don't broadcast their absurd amount of incompetency? I for one, for safety reasons would want to know for sure where this lunatic is.

I believe the real lunatics are the LAPD lets face it they drove this person to become insane with all their corruption. Yes it's bad that he murdered innocent people but I for one don't blame him entirely. The innocent blood spilled also lays on the hands of the LAPD.. It's too bad it all came down to this but who knows what the LAPD did to him first to start this whole mess. I hold both parties accountable not just the lunatic

“Status: 8-MTN-1, 8-MTN-2 have been taken off the scanner to ensure officer safety during the manhunt.”
I really doubt the suspect is monitoring LEO comms via R.R

I was thinking the exact same thing. The threat would have his own radio and not using a cellphone with internet and spotty, mountain reception to obtain the whereabouts of his chasers. SO stopping any broadcast, even tactical chatter, is worthless since the suspect, the main person officials do not want to hear it, would still be able to listen. But that is par for the course with many Americans mentality towards security. Pseudo-security seems to pacify us while real security (in this case officials using encrypted or unlisted channels) would be the real solution.
Without those channels, spectr17's feed is virtually useless for me to hear the latest news from the "front lines," so I stopped listening.

Yeah, really? Like he's out in the woods sipping hot coffee, with his iPad, and rocket launcher trying to hear the lousy tactical information on there anyhow.

I would instantly have it streaming else where. There is no reason for that. I would put it else where if it was taken down or put on a delay.

I guess I could understand removing the feed if the suspect was known to be in the area and the TAC guys were getting geared up to make an app. However, that is not the case and more importantly tactical secure radio coms are already in use. Removing the feed served no purpose and only drove traffic to other scanner sites that still have the feed up.

about an hour ago I heard an officer instruct another officer to look up coordinates using Google maps on his iPhone.. That doesn't instill much confidence. Or is that a normal thing?
