Default CB Radio Antenna Question For My Truck

Hey guys i have a question about cb radio antenna. i was thinking/wondering if its possible to use the car stereo antenna that is mounted on the hood/front fender already. i dont use my radio i plug in my ipod all the time. so my question is can we plug in the end of the stock antenna into the cb. please let me know guys, i figured it would be stealth hiding it instead of a long antenna on roof lol. thank you

Sorry, you cannot use the factory AM/FM antenna for RX/TX. You do have options though if you only want 1 antenna. You will need to replace the whole antenna setup and install this, along with a CB antenna.

Amazon.com: FireStik AR-1A Matchmaker CB / AM/FM CB antenna splitter: Electronics

Smile There used to make adapters for converting

Years ago they used to make some kind of an adapter that would let you use your car radio antenna for a cb antenna. I dont think they make those any more. You might be able to find one if you look, but not sure.

Would it be possible to use that 'stereo' antenna for CB? Yes, but you wouldn't like it. The performance would go way down, and it isn't a simple thing to do. Those 'converters' that used to be around aren't around anymore cuz they didn't work very well. It's also possible to remove that 'stereo' antenna completely and install a CB antenna in it's place. I seriously doubt if it would be very 'stealthy' though.

I've got a Hustler RG27 on the fender of my pickup and FWIW, it doesn't really look too different from a regular AM/FM antenna except it's a bit longer and has a small load coil in the middle. It's certainly more stealthy than one of those spiral-wound fiberglass rods that you can spot from a mile away.

As far as using a regular AM/FM antenna for CB, you might be able to receive on it, but you won't like the performance. I wouldn't try to transmit with one.

Default Cb antenna

Just bought a new truck and found a 6 inch cb antenna on the fender. I was wondering if I could use this antenna for a small midland cb

A 6" CB antenna? I hope you don't mean a 'rubberducky'. I don't think I've ever seen a CB antenna that short. Can it be used? Probably, but I certainly wouldn't expect it to be of much use.

I tried one of the dual use AM/FM/CB antenna things in the 1990 and the performance on CB was terrible at best. Much better to have something mounted on the bed at least 36 inches long unless you just want to listen.

I cannot remember where I found it so this may be a little bit of a tease and I'm sorry for that, BUT I have a chrome plated brass coupler with threads to fit the stud on the stock antenna and standard 3/8-24 threads on the other end. I have used the Radio Shack base loaded CB antenna on it with good results.

Somebody makes it, I'll try to find where I bought it.

Nice. If you can't find one of those, someone with a machine shop should be able to turn one of those out on a lathe pretty quick. I never thought of that, good idea. 3/8"x24 on top, and whatever thread to match the existing stud. I'd likely want to swap out the coaxial cable, unless it is better than what GM used to use.

As for a 6" CB antenna, sounds more like a UHF antenna, or a cut down AM/FM antenna. A 6" CB antenna would suck to the Nth degree.

This looks like a rod coupling. They can be found in many flavors at most hardware stores.

Right, shouldn't be a problem to find a 3/8 x 24 rod coupling. The difficult part would be mating it to the stud on the vehicle. Those are not likely to be the same thread. A guy with a metal lathe could turn one for you with the correct threads and size on each end. You could likely make something with a set screw on one end, but that could be problematic. I like the idea though, innovative and simple.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but that's an awesome product right there. Any further information on it?

2001 SS Camaro. Currently being transformed into an SCCA road course racing car. License didn't get approved in time for a track day so I put a CB in the car and gave the crew a couple hand held CBs so we could have some kind of communications. Worked better than expected.
