Using DCS Receive
Ok, I've been using DCS codes to receive the NOAA WX Radio on 162.550 and on my Kenwood TMV71-A it cuts out quite a bit when I put the DCS code on. My DCS scan is indicating a DCS of 074 if I'm remembering correctly.
Now, on a very locally active freq of 464.975, I am listening with a DCS code of 546. Children's Memorial is on this freq, but is using a PL tone of 118.8, and then on the same freq there is someone using a PL of 162.2
The DSC code of 546 I thought was only being used by the specific station I was listening for, but tonight I heard what sounded like either police or security on that freq as well, taking a "female" to a specific address, also using the 546 DCS.
Two questions here:
Why is it that the NOAA WX Radio cuts out on the TMV71-A with DCS enabled, and it does just fine without the DCS on?
Does anyone know who in the heck is using DCS 546 on 464.975? Who is this security or police traffic?
FYI, I did do a freq search and I doubt it is anyone listed so far for the Chicago or near by suburban region.

I've never heard of a 162.xxx NOAA weather station using a PL or DPL tone. My PRO-92 is not currently detecting a tone in use on 162.550 from eastern DuPage County.
My notes don't indicate that I've ever logged a 464.975 (D546). I'm curious to know who you thought might be using that tone. I too am curious to know who you're actually hearing on that tone - from your description, it sounds like it could be a PD tactical channel (street names, etc. could help solve this mystery). Are you getting complete conversations? If not, it might be intermod/mixing.
FWIW, my records show that public safety at the Loyola University Lakeshore Campus is using the 162.2 PL on 464.975.

The radio user with the 546 DCS did give an address, but I didn't want to put it on the forum. I'm wondering if it is possible I heard some kind of police tact like you suggested. I did find out who the station is that I was interested in though. It is one of my local schools, also on the 546 DCS. Thing is, I can't find a license for this school listed in the FCC database. Maybe they don't know they need one? Maybe they don't require a license at all?

I've never got or heard of a tone on any NWS frequency, but wouldn't mind it if they would add one.

You really can't always count on a consumer radio to give you the right DCS code; especially if you notice it being flaky as to the displayed code. I have noticed this quite a few times over the years.

Put 162.550 on, do a tone scan using DCS. It'll pop up as a DCS tone of 074, did it several times already.

I have figured out that the ops I'm hearing here as far as the op that gave the address for a "female transport" was one of the security ops listed by SAR. The other user has also been identified positively as one of the CPS ops near me.

Anything is always possible with CPS. However, this freq is NOT listed in their licensure with the FCC at the ULS database. So, I'm assuming they have a license under a different name or they don't even know that they need a license. This is one school in particular using this freq. I've stood right next to the security folks there and listened in whilst they were paying attention to other things. Same traffic on my radio as on theirs and at the same time as well...so, right freq and right school.
Just a matter of wondering out loud why this freq does not show at the FCC page? |

This specific freq is school specific in this case. or it seems to be anyway.
