Default What Coax for Wellbrook loop to Icom R75 ?

What would be a good coax between Wellbrook ALA1530AL-2 and the Icom IC-R75 ?

My radio will be on the second floor of a 2 story building with the antenna on a rotor on top of the roof.

I live in a highly condensed city with a tiny cement yard so mounting on the ground would not be feasible.

From what I read, Wellbrook doesn't recommend grounding the outer coax from the antenna to the power amplifier box.

I'm looking at a 50 foot run of LMR 240 or the cheaper, more flexible RFC240UF.

I will also be running a #6 copper ground wire up the wall to the antenna mast, but not touching the antenna.

Thankyou for reading

I use LMR240 and love it-strong and highly weatherproof. Excellent shielding. I use it for the scanners as well as HF. I requested your thread to be moved to the proper HF antenna forum.

Default What coax for Wellbrook

Woo hoo ! Got the wellbrook ALA1530 up ! Used LMR 240 ulra flex coax with two BNC clamp connectors.

It's on a Channel Master rotor 9521A, 10 foot radio shack mast and the antenna itself is mounted on a 4 foot fiberglass mast.

I used coax sealer tape on the BNC connector, and on the two joints at the base of the antenna.

Thank you everybody for all the information !

That's a pretty decent antenna - as a rule the thicker the coax is the better. But, do not sacrifice budget on thickness for lack of shield i.e. no matter the brand name/make of the coax and its thickness, it's not a good quality coax if the outer braiding doesn't offer complete and total coverage. A lot of coax from the Far East comes on the Western market at a "good price" because costs have been sacrificed in limiting the amount of material/coverage provided in the braiding.

There are 3 or 4 ways through which poor quality/thin coverage braiding impacts upon received signal quality & strength. The primary downfall is in shielding from "noise" - and the longer the coax is the bigger that will present as a problem.

Faced with the choice of a thinner coax with complete/total braiding coverage, or a thicker coax with a thinner and/or less dense braiding, I'd choose the thinner coax. Its a darn side easier to boost signal strength than it is to deal with the unpredictable nature of coax picked up & introduced noise.

Best coax will have a 100% woven braid covering an overlapped foil winding.

Secondly - coax connectors: good quality connecters are important and where these are outside, covering them and the connecting with self vulcanizing or self fusing tape will keep moisture out. Get any moisture/water into a a coax connector and the braiding will wick it up and along the length of the coax, like a sponge, destroying impedance and capacitance characteritics to the detriment of signal quality.

...... and, as I always say to folk who are listening primarily to a narrow band of freq's - a good quality pass band filter mounted at the antenna will add big time to received and demodulated signal quality.

Ooo you got the flex-good stuff I have the straight 240 no flex, but it will give enough to work with. You did a pro job all the way-good on you. Enjoy the toys!
