A male hiker died Wednesday after falling 50 feet near the upper trailhead to Maxwell Falls.
The unidentified hiker fell at 2:30 p.m. about a 15-minute walk from the trailhead. Rescuers were on the scene a short time later and had tried to bring him to a waiting helicopter via a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
An officer at the scene said that when rescuers found the hiker on a ledge, he was unconscious. The helicopter landed on Brook Forest Road, which was closed to traffic.
Evergreen Fire/Rescue was working to recover the body, Fire Chief Garry DeJong said.
Also on the scene were personnel from Elk Creek Fire-Rescue, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Forest Service and the Alpine Rescue Team.
The upper trailhead is about 8 miles southwest of Evergreen on Brook Forest Road in the Arapaho National Forest
