FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Date: 09-10-09 Time: 7:40 PM

On 09-10-09 at approximately 9:40 AM Colorado State Patrol troopers responded to a single vehicle accident on the westbound Colorado 70 exit ramp to U.S. 6 in Clear Creek County.

A brown 1993 Kenworth semi hauling road bed material (an oil/gravel mixture) was exiting westbound Colorado 70 at milepost 244. The Kenworth failed to negotiate a curve in the exit ramp and went off the left side of the roadway. The Kenworth then traveled through a guardrail, continuing on for another 110 feet before going airborne over Clear Creek. The front of the Kenworth then struck the opposing embankment. The tractor came to a stop while the trailer continued moving forward, impacting the rear of the tractor. The trailer came to rest partially in the waterway.

The driver of the Kenworth has been identified as Octavio Schaffino, 44 of Phoenix, AZ. Schaffino sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clear Creek County Coroner. It is unclear if Schaffino was wearing a seatbelt.

The Kenworth was owned by A.A.O./Arviso Inc. of Commerce City. It was hauling road bed material. An unknown amount of the dry road bed material was deposited into Clear Creek. In addition, 100 gallons of diesel fuel also entered the waterway as a result of a rupture of the fuel tanks on the Kenworth.

CSP Hazmat units as well as local fire units contained the diesel spill and a private environmental reclamation company is handling the clean up of the scene.

Alcohol/drugs are not suspected of being contributing factors. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Next of kin HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED.
