Just an Oct winter storm
INDEPENDENCE PASS TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE TODAY AT 3 PM
(Re-open pending impacts of winter storm)
Severe winter storm warning – motorists are urged to prepare vehicles for winter driving, refer to Winter Driving Tips at Winter Driving Main Page
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will temporarily close Independence Pass today, October 27, at 3 P.M. due to a winter storm warning and heavy snow predicted above 8,000. This closure includes the area from just east of Aspen to west of Twin Lakes, approximately 18 miles.
According to the warning, snow is expected to develop later this evening and continue until Thursday evening—total snowfall accumulations of up to 16 inches are expected in the high country. The storm is predicted to bring strong winds, making travel across Independence Pass—and other high-elevation highways—hazardous or impossible.
A re-opening of the pass will depend upon the results of the storm and whether it’s feasible and safe to open it again before the pass’s regularly scheduled seasonal closure of November 7 at 2:00 PM. Motorists are encouraged to check CDOT’s traveler information site at Road Conditions, Speeds, Travel Times, Traffic Cameras, Live Streaming Traffic Cameras, Road Closures and Road Work Information provided by Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) a branch of Colorado Department of Transportation, under Alerts and Restrictions to determine the status of this and other seasonal passes. For road condition information, the public may also call 511 from anywhere in the state.

That sounds like fun. I miss a good snowstorm every now and then, although 16" is just barely enough to play in. Now all I get is the one inch variety that shuts down the entire county. How sad is that?

Vermont has already had several decent snowfalls in the mountains, we had snow as early as late September this year. It's looking like it may be a good winter.

Just for the sake of arguement Vermont really does not have mountains, I grew up skiing there every weekend and really did not experience true mountains until I moved west!
10-24" remains the forecast for most areas of Colorado through Thursday.

Snow... heavy at times will continue into Thursday. Total snowfall
accumulations of 14 to 28 inches are expected... with up to 36
inches possible near the foothills. North winds of 15 to 30 mph
will produce areas of blowing and drifting snow.
Power outages will be possible because of the added weight of the
heavy snow on branches and power lines and some tree branches may
snap due to the weight of the snow.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Residents should expect winter storm conditions through Thursday.
Roads will be slushy and snowpacked with Road closures possible.
If you must travel today or Thursday... take along a winter
survival kit.

San Francisco, CA Alert Detail
A 'Civil Emergency Message' was transmitted for the I80 closure in Wyoming. I assume that means that the Natl Weather Radio stations activated everyones weather radios in Wyoming. Can anyone confirm?

I think it is the Emergency Broadcast System but Wyoming uses the weather radios to carry those frequently.
