2 Dead, 15 Injured in Aurora Fire | 5280FIRE
08/06 ~ Around 23:00 Aurora Firefighters were dispatched to their second working fire on the night in the area of 17th and Peoria. While enroute, dispatch advised they were receiving multiple calls. Engine 2 arrived first due at 1747 Peoria Street and found heavy fire showing with multiple people trapped. Aurora Police Officers began assisting residents and reported people jumping from the building. A 2nd Alarm was immediately transmitted. The common interior stairwell was fully involved with fire, forcing all the buildings occupants to escape from their windows. Truck 2 began ladder rescues while Engine’s 2 and 3 battled the flames and made entry. Truck 8 went interior to effect rescues on the 3rd and 4th floors. Engine 1 was assigned as the ems group and set up a triage & transport area at the 7-Eleven nearby. Multiple companies worked several attack lines and battled fire on all floors, bringing the fire under control within 45 minutes. Three deceased victims were found during the primary search and 12 injured residents were transported. The secondary search proved negative and crews overhauled for nearly two hours.
Witnesses report that a 20-30 year old, thin white male wearing a white & black checkered shirt and long pants was seen entering the building with a gas can moments before the fire started. The Aurora Police Major Crimes unit was on scene and numerous witness interviews were conducted. All residents of the building have been displaced and the American Red Cross is assisting.
