Safeway robbery suspect arrested

Police have arrested the man suspected in an attempted robbery and possible hostage situation at the Safeway on South College this morning.

David Dubois, 19, of Fort Collins was arrested after he escaped from the store at 460 S. College and led police on a foot chase to the corner of Whedbee and Oak streets, according to dispatch reports.

Dubois surrendered shortly after 11 a.m. at 218 Whedbee telling police he was coming off an methadone addiction, according to dispatch reports.

SWAT teams were called to the Safeway at 460 S. College, shortly before 10:30 a.m. after reports that a man with a mask and rifle had entered the store, said Fort Collins Police spokeswoman Rita Davis.

Dispatch reports that shots were fired and a hostage taken at some point and have not yet been confirmed, Davis said.
Police are still sweeping the Safeway and nearby stores to ensure no other suspects are involved. It is unclear if anyone was injured.

This story will be updated throughout the morning.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- An armed robbery and possible hostage situation at the Safeway grocery store on South College and Mulberry ended without injuries Friday morning, Fort Collins police said.

One man, identified as 19-year-old David Dubois, was taken into custody.

Police said it began at about 10:27 a.m. when a man, armed with an pistol and wearing a mask, walked into the store's pharmacy department and demanded money from the clerks.

Witnesses said he fired three shots into the air.

He briefly took several employees as hostages before he took off, witnesses said.

Moments later, police caught up with the suspect, in his vehicle, a few blocks away. He was taken into custody without incident.

Inside his 1993 blue Ford Ranger pickup truck, officers found an assault rifle, a .357-caliber handgun, and drugs allegedly stolen from the Safeway pharmacy, police said.

Dubois was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital for evaluation before being transferred to the Larimer County Detention Center where he will be booked on armed robbery and kidnapping charges, police said.

Officers had been called to Dubois' house earlier in the day on reports of a suicidal party.

He had called his mom at 10:01 a.m. from his home on Bradbury Court to say goodbye, his mother said. She called police and told them that he was emotional and had access to guns in the home.

By the time police and his mother arrived at his home, Dubois was gone. Approximately 20 minutes later he allegedly entered the Safeway Store and robbed the pharmacy, police said.

Safeway and his home are close to one another and that's why officers were on the scene three minutes after the initial 911 call. They surrounded the store, closing nearby streets and clearing pedestrians from the area as they prepared to storm inside the shopping complex.

A large number of employees and customers were inside the store at the time of the robbery, but it's not clear if Dubois held anyone hostage, police department spokeswoman Rita Davis.

After the incident, employees gathered at a nearby apartment complex to console one another and to wait to be interviewed by police investigators. Witnesses who have not spoken to Fort Collins Police are asked to contact Detective Jim Byrne at 970-221-6269.

In June, a Safeway employee went on a shooting spree inside a warehouse in Denver. Michael Ford killed on coworker and shot four others before the SWAT team killed him. The shooting happened at the Safeway warehouse on Stapleton Drive near Interstate 70 and Quebec.

Ford worked in the produce department at the distribution center for at least a year before the shooting.

Which press agency released the last article?

Trying to make a connection with the warehouse employee shooting this summer and today's incident with this guy makes zero sense.
