Another fatal and double C/G
A one-vehicle crash killed one person and injured six others early Friday morning near Niwot.
The Colorado State Patrol said a Chevrolet Blazer was traveling at a high rate of speed on U.S. Highway 287 when the driver turned on to Monarch Road and plunged into an irrigation ditch, ejecting five people and trapping two others. The mishap was reported just before 3 a.m.
Emergency response was delayed for at least 30 minutes because the first person to tell anyone about the crash walked a mile-and-a-half to farm house and called their mother, asking her to call a tow truck, according to investigators. The tow truck driver arrived at the accident location and called 911 when he saw the injured people.
When emergency crews arrived they found two people still trapped in the SUV, which was in the irrigation ditch. Everyone at the crash location was unconscious, the state patrol said.
The person who died was a man in his 30s, but he has not been formally identified. He was not driving.
Two of the injured people were airlifted to St. Anthony's Central Hospital and the others were transported to hospitals by ground ambulances. The extent of their injuries were not immediately known.
Investigators said speed and alcohol were likely factors in the fatal crash and they ordered blood-alcohol tests on the driver.
