Douglas Pass: Car Plummets More Than 300 Over Embankment

KKCO News

A 46 year old grandmother from Utah was driving her car South on Highway 139 over Douglas Pass when she failed to negotiate a curve and ran right off the roadway.

The car carrying her two and six year old grand children, her daughter, and two other men plummeted down a 340 foot embankment where it came to rest.

It took rescue crews with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office three hours to get all six of the occupants to safety.

One person was transported to St. Mary's Hospital complaining of back pain, but everyone else suffered only bumps and bruises.

Officials stress having warm clothing and blankets, along with food and water, in your vehicles during the winter in case of emergencies.
